Does Doing My Oil Change at Home Void My Factory Warranty?
No, it does not. Many people worry about keeping up their vehicle’s factory warranty. Often, folks believe they must go back to the dealership for service to maintain that warranty. This is simply not the case.

There’s a law called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. It protects your right to NOT be compelled by the manufacturer and/or its representatives (dealerships in this case) to use their parts for maintenance. That said, not too many people these days want the hassle of crawling under their cars, trucks, or SUVs and doing their own service. Much less the headache of disposing of the old oil.
Disposing waste oil in a legal and environmentally responsible way requires having the right container type, then transporting it in your nice clean vehicle to a waste oil facility—which is usually someplace that changes oil in the first place. Meaning, you haven’t even saved yourself a trip to a shop. At which point, one has to wonder, what was the point of doing it at home?
We know what the answer is: people want their oil change done at home because it’s convenient. But few want to actually have to do the dirty work, unless they are automotive hobbyists and enjoy doing that sort of thing. If you are one of them, more power to you! We love cars too!
